It was April 16 and there they were--sitting in racks on a table in the local county library. There were probably at least 30 pounds of unused tax forms, publications, and instructions on that table, with boxes of forms below them. In total, there was around 50 pounds of these documents, most of which will not be able to be reused as is since they bore the current year on them.
Sure, the paper will probably get recycled. However, the money and man-hours spend to print and ship the stuff becomes a waste.
Again, I had to think of how this contrasts with the Holy Bible, the written Word of God to man. Oh yes, much of it is printed on paper which also gets trashed or recycled after sometime, but the effort, power, Truth, spirit and more continues on. All the principles of the Word remain in effect and all that His Spirit has mandated continues to go forth. Nothing is wasted.
But one might say, "What about the millions who have rejected its message? Is that not a waste?" Nay, for it is written in Isaiah 55:11, "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." Those who have rejected it have been given a chance to latch on to the salvation offered in Christ.
The pure Word of God is never a waste. And, unlike the tax code, it needs no update. What God said to the ancients who faithfully recorded His Word remains the same and relevant to each of our lives.
Some might not think so, but that is because they are evaluating the Word from a sinful nature, with which we are all born with. Sin is still sin despite what Congress, the Supreme Court, or the President says. They will have to answer to God for their rejection of the Word of God, and really, of God Himself.
Just like those tax papers I saw will be no more, one day our Nation, and all nations will be no more. Only the Kingdom of God will be. It is important that each one of us submit to Christ the King now, and fully trust His unchangeable ever-relevant Word, and apply it to our lives. That is no waste at all.

"O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates and thy gates of rubies, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD, and great shall be the peace of thy children." --- Isaiah 54:11-13
