Most names of people mean something, especially those descended from Abraham, the Jews. Sometimes God specifically told the parents what to name the child. Such was the case for the Christ just over 2,000 years ago.

The angel of the Lord appeared unto Joseph in a dream, saying, "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS, for He shall save His people from their sins." (Matthew 1:20-21)

In Hebrew, that would be "Yeshua" (Joshua), and the Koine Greek renders it "Jesus" in English. That might be a surprise to some, but nonetheless it is true, and is the most fitting name for the Messiah, for it means, "Jehovah (YHWH) is salvation." When applied to the title, "Messiah," "Christ," it reaches the highest level. God Himself is our very salvation. He personally did what was needed to rescue us from sins.

What was needed was for Him to be veiled in our flesh, becoming the new start for mankind, the "second Adam" as the Christmas carol terms it.

The veiling of Himself with flesh that the prophetic name for the Messiah, Immanuel, meaning "God with us," was literally fulfilled.

"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14.

God was now with us in earth-time not just by His Spirit, but by human flesh. This second Adam, being the new beginning for mankind, would be victorious over every temptation a person could face. That victory was sealed by His death upon the cross and resurrection and released to man, for those who would receive it, at His triumphant ascension.
