"If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable," wrote the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 15:19. Yes, that would be terrible since people like him, a true Christian, come under verbal, social, and physical abuse -- even to death -- for being committed to Christ.
While much of the murdering of true Christians occurs outside of the United States, those in America also come under attack losing friends, jobs, and the freedoms granted to them in the U.S. Constitution.
However, by the Holy Spirit, Paul continues. In verses 20 to 22 it is written, "But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."
Those who have placed their faith in Christ, that have truly committed to Him, can fully expect Life Eternal, and not damnation. It is really those who do not have Christ as King that are miserable.
Indeed, they may have a lot of things to keep them happy in this life, but I view that as satan's (I avoid capitalizing that name) opium, to say the least. If you think of it, all in this present life is transient. Nice homes, cars, clothes and all just do not last.
When I brought our dog inside this morning I took a look at the back porch awning I had made with its intricate support structure. Well, the wood for that structure is cracked and in some cases warped.
By the way, look at your computer. You know that does not last. Even if you have a hardy setup that can operate for decades, somewhere along the line there will be a malfunction or the equipment will just be outdated.
Nothing we see will last.
That is why a true Christian is not miserable, because he has Eternal Life, some that will never be worn down but continue forever, if that person decides to stay in Christ and is in Christ when they physically die.
Though things fall apart, even one's own body, the true Christian has the enduring hope of Life Eternal, and has no reason to fear Eternal damnation.

"O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates and thy gates of rubies, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD, and great shall be the peace of thy children." --- Isaiah 54:11-13
